NOVEMBER 1, 2019

FREE SHOWING - HBO's "WIG" Directed by Chris Moukarbel
The Auditorium in Downtown Eureka Springs, Nov. 1, 2019 at 8pm.

Out in Eureka in partnership with HBO, The Eureka Springs Film Commission, The Mayor’s council of the arts, and The City of Eureka Springs are proud to present this free showing on for fall diversity weekend 2019 “WIG" showing at The Auditorium on November 1, 2019 from 8pm-10pm is a documentary that spotlights the art of drag, and centered on WigStock. Wigstock was an annual outdoor drag festival that began in the 1980s in Manhattan's East Village that took place on Labor Day. Traditionally, the festival would act as the unofficial end to the summer for the gay community of New York City. The name refers to the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

This HBO documentary showcases the personalities and performances that inform the ways we understand queerness, art and identity today.

Following a night out at the Pyramid Club in 1984, a group of club goers decided to keep the party going with an impromptu show in Tompkins Square Park. Lady Bunny and friends were inspired to do the unthinkable: host a drag show outdoors, in the middle of the day. And thus, Wigstock was born in the middle of a time of crisis, a decade marked by the AIDS crisis and backlash against the LGBTQ community.

Wigstock, mirrored after Woodstock, gained immense popularity before eventually losing steam and disappearing after the 2001 festival. In its time, it helped move drag into the mainstream and drew the attention of popular artists.

After 17 dormant years, Lady Bunny has brought it back. In 2018, Bunny joined forces with actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka, to revive Wigstock.

This past summer, the festival returned, bringing together legendary performers with some of the new children of drag, into one of the largest drag performances ever staged. "WIG" explores the origins and the influence of the historic festival through rich archival footage, as well as provides a look into the contemporary drag movement that the festival served as a foundation for. "WIG" is a celebration of New York drag culture, and those personalities and performances that contribute to the ways we understand queerness, art, and identity today. “WIG” stars: Lady Bunny, Kevin Aviance, Bianca Del Rio, Boomer Banks, Jackie Beat, Willam Belli, Fenton Bailey, Joey Arias, Debbie Harry, Lypsinka, Rupaul, Varla Jean Merman, Michael Musto, Flotilla Debarge, David Burtka, Neil Patrick Harris and many more, including archival footage of many other legends. THIS IS A FREE EVENT. TICKETS ARE NOT REQUIRED. SEATING IS ON A FIRST COME BASIS.
