Beautifully Being Ourselves
There’s a moment when you arrive in Eureka Springs that feels almost like a quiet handshake between you and the town. It’s subtle. It’s not announced with fanfare or fireworks. It’s not even something you can point to on a map. It’s more like a shift in the air, a softening in your chest, a sense that something got a hold of you.
One visit is all it will take for you to feel that hard-to-explain, magical tug on your soul - connecting you to this corner of the world.
Welcome, you've arrived!
Beautiful Eureka Springs sees you before you even introduce yourself to her.
I actually recognize that moment in others now. I see it in the way visitors pause on Spring Street, taking in the curve of the road as if it’s inviting them to follow it. I see it in the way people slow down when they walk past Basin Park, letting the music or laughter or breeze pull them into the present. I see it in the way newcomers look up at the Victorian rooftops, the balconies, the staircases that seem to appear out of nowhere, and realize they’ve entered a town that doesn’t behave like other towns.
Eureka Springs doesn’t try to be straight or predictable or conventional. It never has. And that’s part of its magic.

This place was carved into the hills with a kind of stubborn whimsy. The roads curve because the land curves. The houses cling to the cliffs because the cliffs insisted on being part of the story. The springs bubble up wherever they please, and the town simply learned to build around them. Nothing here was forced into a grid. Nothing was flattened or straightened or simplified.
And maybe that’s why people who have felt flattened or straightened or simplified by the world find themselves breathing easier here.
"Eureka Springs is a place where crooked is beautiful. Where different is celebrated. Where diversity isn’t a buzzword. It’s a way of life. Everyday!" /John-Michael Scurio
And every fall, when Diversity Weekend arrives, that way of life becomes a full‑blown celebration. November 6 - 8, 2026 is Diversity Weekend. But before I get to that, I want to talk about something deeper. Something that sits at the heart of this town and at the heart of every diversity weekend we host.
I want to talk about why diversity matters. Why inclusion matters. Why belonging matters. And why Eureka Springs has become a living example of what happens when a community chooses to embrace all three.

The Town That Heals You Without Asking What Hurt You
People have been coming to Eureka Springs for healing since the 1800s. Back then, it was the springs. Folks believed the water could cure their ailments, and they traveled from all over the country to soak, sip, and hope.
Today, the healing still happens, but it’s not just the water. It’s the people. It’s the energy. It’s the acceptance that wraps around you like a warm blanket the moment you step into town.
Eureka Springs heals the parts of you that have been bruised by judgment. It heals the parts that have been silenced by fear. It heals the parts that have been told they are too much or not enough. And it does this without asking you to explain yourself.
You don’t have to justify your identity here. You don’t have to shrink your personality. You don’t have to hide your love. You don’t have to pretend. You just get to be.

And that simple act of being yourself, fully and unapologetically, is one of the most powerful forms of healing there is.
I’ve watched people arrive in Eureka Springs carrying years of weight on their shoulders. I’ve watched them walk our "not-so-straight" streets, meet our quirky residents, sit in our cafes, dance in our entertainment spots, and laugh in our parks. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, I’ve watched that weight lift.
It’s community. It’s acceptance. It’s diversity. It’s inclusion. It’s belonging. It's human.
And it’s something we celebrate loudly, proudly, and joyfully during Fall Diversity Weekend.

Diversity Weekend: Where Joy Becomes a Form of Resistance
If you’ve never experienced Fall Diversity Weekend in Eureka Springs, please allow me to paint you a picture.
Imagine the Ozark hills glowing in shades of gold, amber, and crimson. Imagine Victorian hotels draped in rainbow flags. Imagine drag queens strutting across balconies with confidence that could power the entire town. Imagine musicians filling the streets with rhythm. Imagine laughter echoing from every corner. Imagine strangers hugging like old friends. "Hey, who you calling a flag?"
Now imagine all of that happening at once. That’s Fall Diversity Weekend.
It’s not just an event. It’s a homecoming. It’s a celebration of every color in the human rainbow.

People come here from places where they still can’t hold hands in public. They come from towns where being themselves is dangerous. They come from families who don’t understand them. They come from workplaces where they have to hide parts of who they are.
And suddenly, they’re in Eureka Springs. A town that says, “Welcome. We’re glad you’re here.”
During Fall Diversity Weekend, joy becomes a form of resistance. Celebration becomes a form of healing. Community becomes a form of empowerment. The food and beverage establishments are full. The streets are alive. The balconies are glittering. The music is loud. The love is visible. The acceptance is palpable.
And through it all, the town itself stands as a reminder that beauty often comes from breaking the mold.
Diversity isn’t just something we celebrate because it feels good. It’s not just a social virtue or a political talking point. It’s not just something we do because it looks good on a brochure. Diversity makes us smarter. Literally.
One one hand, I am a blogger and on the other a Vice President of Human Resources. Research shows that diverse groups outperform homogeneous groups in creativity, innovation, problem‑solving, and decision‑making. When people from different backgrounds, identities, cultures, and experiences come together, they bring different information to the table. They challenge assumptions. They spark new ideas. They encourage deeper thinking.
Diversity forces us to expand our worldview. It pushes us to consider perspectives we might never have encountered otherwise. It makes us more adaptable, more empathetic, and more open‑minded.
Our Eureka Springs is living proof of that. Our town thrives because of its diversity. Not despite it.
We have artists, musicians, sculptors, bakers, designers, performers, writers, holy rollers, dreamers, and doers. We have LGBTQIA+ residents, straight allies, hillbillies, retirees, young families, spiritual seekers, harley riders, hobos, free spirits, and people who simply wandered in one weekend and never left.
Every person adds something to the collective brilliance of this stunning place on earth.
Diversity isn’t a challenge here. It’s our superpower.
Let’s be honest. The world feels heavy sometimes. Division. Fear. Misunderstanding. Legislation that targets people simply for existing. Communities and families torn apart by politics or prejudice.
Eureka Springs stands as a reminder that another way is possible
A way rooted in acceptance, celebration, community, and LOVE. We don’t pretend everything is perfect here. We have our challenges. We have our disagreements. We even have hillbullies. (You heard that right.)
Like every place, we, too, have our growing pains. But we face them together and we keep working together to build the kind of community we want to live in.
Eureka! You Found It.
The place where you're "free to be."
So, here’s my invitation. Come visit. Come experience Fall Diversity Weekend 2026. Come walk our crooked streets. Come meet our beautiful people. Come feel the magic that tugs at your heart. Come see how diversity makes us smarter, kinder, and more connected to one another. Come discover why this town changes people.
Eureka Springs isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience. It’s a community. It’s a feeling. It’s a home. And once you feel it, truly feel it, you’ll understand why so many people arrive for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
Eureka. You found it, beautiful you.❤️
